The Short Answer: Your starting teams earn points based on their real-world performance — goals scored, goals conceded, and match results.
The Two Ways to Earn Points
Fantasy Fútbol uses a simple two-part scoring system:
- Goal Differential — points from goals scored and conceded
- Match Result Points — points from wins and draws
Every match your starting teams play counts: domestic league games, cup matches, and European tournaments.
1. Goal Differential (GD)
| Event | Points |
|---|---|
| Goal scored by your team | +1 |
| Goal conceded by your team | -1 |
Example: Liverpool vs Ipswich Town
Your starting team Liverpool beats Ipswich 2-1.
- Liverpool scored 2 goals: +2 points
- Liverpool conceded 1 goal: -1 point
- Goal Differential: +1
Example: A High-Scoring Thriller
Your starting team Bayern Munich beats Mainz 5-3.
- Bayern scored 5 goals: +5 points
- Bayern conceded 3 goals: -3 points
- Goal Differential: +2
Example: A Blowout Loss
Your starting team Burnley loses to Manchester City 0-4.
- Burnley scored 0 goals: +0 points
- Burnley conceded 4 goals: -4 points
- Goal Differential: -4
Key insight: High-scoring wins are valuable. Clean sheets matter. Getting blown out hurts.
2. Match Result Points (MRP)
Points awarded based on whether your team wins, draws, or loses.
Domestic League Matches
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | +3 |
| Draw | +1 |
| Loss | +0 |
Domestic Cup Matches
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | +4 |
| Draw | +2 |
| Loss | +0 |
Cup matches matter more because they're knockout — there's more on the line.
European Tournament Matches
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | +5 |
| Draw | +2 |
| Loss | +0 |
European nights are the biggest stage. The points reflect that.
Putting It All Together
Your total points from a match = Goal Differential + Match Result Points
Full Example: Champions League Night
Arsenal beats PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in the Champions League.
- GD: +3 scored, -1 conceded = +2
- MRP: European win = +5
- Total: +7 points
Full Example: Domestic League Weekend
Real Madrid draws 2-2 with Atletico in La Liga.
- GD: +2 scored, -2 conceded = 0
- MRP: League draw = +1
- Total: +1 point
Full Example: A Painful Loss
AC Milan loses 0-3 to Inter in Serie A.
- GD: 0 scored, -3 conceded = -3
- MRP: Loss = +0
- Total: -3 points
Yes, you can lose points. A bad loss will cost you.
Quick Reference
| Competition | Win | Draw | Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic League (Premier League, La Liga, etc.) | +3 | +1 | 0 |
| Domestic Cup (FA Cup, Copa del Rey, etc.) | +4 | +2 | 0 |
| European (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League) | +5 | +2 | 0 |
Plus goal differential (+1 per goal scored, -1 per goal conceded) in all competitions.
Which Teams Count?
Only your Starting 5 earn you points.
You draft 10 teams total, but each month you choose 5 to be your starters. Only those 5 starters earn points from their matches that month.
Your other 5 teams sit on the bench. They still play their real-world matches, but those results don't count toward your score.
Why this matters: Strategic lineup selection is everything. A bench team having a monster month earns you nothing.
See Starting 5 vs. Bench for more on this.
All Competitions Count
One of the things that makes Fantasy Fútbol different: every match matters.
If your starting team Arsenal plays:
- Saturday: Premier League vs Wolves → counts
- Tuesday: Champions League vs Barcelona → counts
- Following Saturday: FA Cup vs Manchester United → counts
All three matches earn (or cost) you points. This is why teams in European competition are more valuable — they simply play more matches.
See Competition Types for the full breakdown of which competitions are included.
Frequently Asked Questions
What about penalty shootouts?
Penalty shootout results count as draws for scoring purposes (since the match ended level after 90/120 minutes). The team that wins on penalties gets the win bonus only if the competition awards it that way — we'll clarify this in the app as specific situations arise.
Does it matter how many goals my team scores vs. concedes in a single match?
Absolutely. A 5-0 win is worth much more than a 1-0 win: the 5-0 gives you +5 GD, while the 1-0 gives you +1 GD. Both get the same MRP (win bonus), but the goal differential makes a significant difference.
Can my total points go negative for the month?
Yes. If your teams lose badly across multiple matches, your monthly score can dip below zero. This usually only happens with teams that struggle defensively.
